I’m moving in two weeks. I haven’t started packing. I bought fifteen boxes today. This was obviously the optimal time to purchase My So-Called Life on dvd. Or possibly not.

But this was the first show I obsessed over, years before Alias and Chuck and…well, really, that’s about it. I had to watch it on the basement tv because as usual, my parents would much rather watch the umpteenth episode of Law & Order than Angela Chase’s angst. But I was 14 in 1994, and I was living Angela Chase’s life in my head, except I couldn’t get away with dying my hair red, and I was nowhere near as gorgeous as Claire Danes. And Angela had a few more friends. But otherwise? It could have been me.

Anyway, I rewatched the pilot tonight, and I was struck with two things.

Jordan Catalano is extremely cute, and I can see why I wove my escapist fantasy life around him in 1994. In reality, though? I would have had to brain him with something. The boy is the most dimwitted stoner I’ve ever seen on screen. And I’ve SEEN Dazed and Confused.

Angela Chase’s mother is my mother. She says the exact same thing to Angela that my mother said to me when I dyed my hair red (“Well, we’ll always be able to find you in a crowd” in that special resigned why-did-you-do-this tone of voice).

Will definitely be watching more before the movies have to be packed away. It still holds up and is still great, even if I’m ten years removed from the angstfest that was high school.

Okay, to be fair, some of my bedding purchases are because I have a cat, and the cat is an ass, and he pees on the bed. So I go through a lot of sheets and have recently bought more spares because I’m sick of doing laundry twice a week. But the quilt I ordered? Don’t really have that excuse. I have an almost brand new one that just came back from the dry cleaners (no prizes for guessing why it was there).

I seriously have a thing for cute sheets and blankets and beds. Quite possibly because I love to sleep (I do, really), but it surpasses any love I have for technicolor flat shoes or handbags or chunky jewelry. It doesn’t surpass my love for romance novels, however, as the piles on my floor and nearly full bookcases will attest.

Anyway, in the interest of sharing, here is what will be on my bed when JC Penney gets around to sending it to me. It’s teal, which is my favorite color – probably part of the reason I gave in.

At least it was on sale?

Today was Mura’s last day in New York, and we had brunch, went shopping, and got completely drenched while sprinting along 42nd Street. Then we got back on the train, because we figured one drenching was enough for one day.

(We got soaked again while running back to the car after getting dinner at Pizzeria Uno, but that’s not the point of this post.)

Our first stop, pre-rain, was Best Buy, where Mura got When Harry Met Sally and Cowboy Bebop, and I got…Invader Zim. The entire series, for $25, people. At least two of my college friends would be jealous. Only one is reading this blog, though.

I also got a totally awesome t-shirt at Books Kinokuniya, which is, hands down, one of the most dangerous stores in New York.

I’m not a big gaming person, and by that I mean that I have never, ever owned any kind of console and my gaming experience tops out with the hours I spent watching boys play Goldeneye in college. I played computer games as a kid on the Mac, but mostly either the educational type or Summer Olympics (which was mostly awesome for the contortions you could make the high divers do if you hit the right keys). One of the neighbors had old school Mario when I was growing up, and to say I sucked at it would be an understatement.

Having said that, I really want a cobalt blue Nintendo DS Lite. Part of it is undoubtedly because it’s pretty. I mean, look at it. It’s SHINY. (This is probably why it’s sold out, too)

Shiny aside, I think I’d actually use it. I have an almost two hour commute each way to work (thank you, Westchester Bus System), and the DS Lite would give me something to do other than read romance novels on the train. In the long run, it’d probably be cheaper. I could play Big Brain Academy (learned that on the Wii at Christmas) and Brain Age.

So that’s what I’ll be asking for as a birthday present this year.
